How do solar electric panels work and where can they be installed?

Photovoltaic (PV) solar electric panels harness the sun's energy and convert it into clean (that is, zero carbon) electricity.  The systems are made up of sets of PV panels that can be placed on any building or piece of land.  Other advantages of Photovoltaic solar electric panels are;
  • they don't need direct sunlight to work: any daylight will charge the cells (but the more intense it is, the more energy will be extracted)
  • you don't need planning permission to install them (unless the building is listed or situated in a conservation area)
If they generate more energy than the building needs, the excess energy is fed back into the grid.  The Feed in Tariff system calculates how much energy you have generated and exported and you automatically get paid for this!

Will solar electric panels pay for themselves and how do they help the environment?

How much energy a solar PV system will generate depends on how much roof space there is available and how many panels we can install.  Typically though, a two-kilowatt peak (kWp), twelve panels, set up would normally generate about half the annual electricity consumption of a typical household.  The same set up will also reduce carbon emissions by anything up to 1,000 kg of CO2 a year!

So as well as being a far greener way to generate your electricity, you can typically expect a system to have paid for itself within eight - ten years.
